It was one of the last warm days of the season. Flocks and flocks … and FLOCKS of Sandhill Cranes were flying over. (Fun fact: A group of cranes is also called a sedge or siege or sometimes a herd.) I was actually doing an eBird count that day, since it was so warm, hoping to possibly catch a few more migrating beauties. Well, boy did I! I lost count after 300 something and some flocks I didn’t even try to count because they were so high up. I kept updating the number on the eBird app but at one point it started asking me if I was sure, because that was an uncommonly large number of cranes and it wanted me to submit comments of verification. After the app froze up and I couldn’t do anything I closed it and went outside with the camera again. A month later, busy life, something reminded to check the last photos I downloaded and many were like the featured photo – zoomed out as far as possible in order to capture the whole flock. And I was very pleased to see I got one, slightly blurry but decent close up of 15 cranes.

SO cool! I just love those birds. You we’re lucky to see so many!
